History of Lakeside

In 1959 the Queensland Motor Sporting Club Inc. was operating events at an old World War Two airstrip in the outer northern Brisbane suburb of Strathpine but after that property was sold for subdivision it needed dedicated facilities.

Members of the club had already been working to raise funds to build that facility on a dairy farm owned by Sid Sakzewski and in the four years from 1957 to 1961, raised enough to start carving Queensland's first permanent, purpose built race track from the undulating countryside on the shores of Lake Kurwongbah.

It was a huge struggle and at times it appeared as though the enterprising venture would stall but with the help of businessmen, sporting organisations, the automotive industry and dedicated enthusiasts sufficient cash was raised for work to begin using voluntary labour.

Lakeside International Raceway was completed and opened on Sunday March 19th., 1961.

Attendance was about 2,000 and the fifteen car field included a 3.4 Jaguar, Plymouth Belvedere and the obligatory Holden. First prize was thirty pounds and a motor mower and the first Queenslander home received ten pounds.

The opening of the circuit was timely as Australian Motor Sport shifted up a gear [no pun intended] with introduction of the Tasman series. Up until then spectators had seen few international stars but the series brought the world to Brisbane and Sid Sakzewski had been a major player in its development.

For the uninitiated The Tasman series was a series of races in Australia and New Zealand during the summer season. It gave international drivers a chance to race during their northern winter hiatus.

The cream of the world's top drivers competed including World Champions Jim Clark, Phil Hill, Graham Hill, Australia's own Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Chris Amon and Jackie Stewart.

Lakeside successfully hosted many major events in its more than 40 years of service to Australian Motor Sport including The Australian Touring Car Championship, for 30 years from 1967 to 1997.

The Australian Grand Prix, the Gold Star Championship, the country's premier open wheel category, the Australian Superbike Championships from 1983 to 1998, the Australian Superkart Championships 1975 to 1997 and top line truck racing.

Lakeside holds a special place in the hearts of Queensland motor racing fans, some have even been married on the start/finish line others have requested their ashes scattered around the circuit after passing on.

Dick Johnson five times Australian Touring Car Champion and multiple Bathurst winner once said, "Lakeside is a real driver's circuit, one of the few left in the country outside of Bathurst. It's extremely demanding both mentally and physically - the degree of difficulty is such that winning should be worth quadruple points."

While Mick Doohan one of the all time great 500cc motorcycle riders said, "If you can learn to race a motorbike at Lakeside, you can compete at any race track in the world."

For many years Lakeside was Australia's fastest racing circuit and there were places around the track where you could get so close to the action you felt you were in the car.

It is now the property of the local shire council but two very dedicated groups of people have worked tirelessly to preserve the circuit [see below]. Application was made to the Heritage Council of Australia to have the facility Heritage listed, this was granted but is now the subject of appeal by the council.

At the time of this release of Lakeside for Grand Prix Legends that appeal was still pending.

Our interpretation of Lakeside is created from a contour map based on aerial photographs taken in 1995 and is wonderfully accurate.

Over the years the track did not alter greatly and we have been able to create a mid 1960's feel by leaving out the bus stop added in 1984 before the right hander that leads to the bridge. Creating the bridge as it was in the period with the left side stanchion protected by armco perilously close to the circuit and by adding the earth wall that used to be at KLG corner known as 'hungry' for its propensity to gobble up cars.

We have also used signage authentic for the period 1966 - 1968 and in many cases in its proper location. Where some artistic licence had to be taken because of a paucity of information generic motor sport advertisements from the period have been used.

It is with a great deal of pleasure that we offer our version of Lakeside International Raceway for Grand Prix Legends to the simracing community and hope that it will keep alive the memory of a Queensland and Australian motor sport icon which gave so much pleasure to so many people.
